Land. Lever. Lift.
No, that’s not some sort of sailor term. Its how I run. Well, its supposed to be how I run. There are a bunch of different running styles out there, and the one I have adopted is “forefoot running” or in other words “barefoot running.” Okay relax, I do wear shoes! I’m not that crazy.
In forefoot running, I run as if I’m not wearing shoes. That is, try to imagine how you would run barefoot across a hardwood floor. You definitely wouldn’t be stomping heel first, unless you wanted to satisfy some need for extreme pain. Rather, you would run on the balls of your feet. By doing so, you get more support and shock absorption. For a better, more visual idea, take a look a this link.
So, yes indeed I wear those Newton’s. However, it is often be said that “Newtons don’t make you a forefoot runner.” I have been struggling with perfecting my form and its been one painful learning experience. I’m happy to say that I think I’m finally making some progress. Today, I had an easy 4 miles with 2x 1mile at 8:00 pace. For the past few weeks, I have been running way to forward on my feet, basically on my toes. As you can imagine, that’s not to pleasant. Today, I concentrated on the “land” and “lever” points; trying to land on the ball of my foot, and things seem to go much better.
