Rinse. Spit. Dominate.

As a doctor and a member of the American College of Sports Medicine, I feel the need to put some actual medical information out there for everyone to enjoy and ponder.

Today’s cutting edge info comes from the School of Sport and Exercise Sciences across the pond in the UK. As detailed in their recent paper in the April 2010 Medicine & Science in Sports and Exercise, they conducted a study to see if swishing a carbohydrate solution in the mouth and spitting it out had any affect on endurance performance over an hour. While not conclusive on the subject by any means, their results are intriguing. Over 1 hour, they found that runners swishing with the test solution ran farther than subjects swishing a placebo solution. This is despite having no measurable effects on blood glucose levels. I don’t know if there is any research comparing spitting versus swallowing the solution, but I will look.

Oh…. get your mind out of the gutter!
