Daughter Throws A Curve Ball

Well, today totally went not according to plan. If you read my last post, you know I had one heck of a training day planned with riding out near Whitefish and then running with some colleagues. Was even going to get my new bike out for a roll finally.

Yeah, well my daughter said “yeah right.”

Around 10:00 last night, she started fussing up something fierce. Just wanted to be held. And no, you must stand while holding her or she will give you an ear full. Of course, one hour of this turned into three hours, and my wife and I found ourselves trying to console a baby at 0300 while watching awful Nickelodeon.

Believe it or not, I was actually up at 5:15, getting dressed for my ride. Checked the temp on the computer, and it read a balmy 29 degrees. Gazing out the window, looking at the ice on my deck, half dressed with two layers, and with only 2 hours of sleep; I decided to bag it and resume spooning my wife.

Woke up 3 hours later, made a huge breakfast for the kids and got some good lawn work done. (ie resumed my ongoing war with Dandelion invasion). After realizing mother nature had fooled the weather man again, the family and I decided to head back out to Glacier Park to finally bag the 4 mile roundtrip hike to Avalanche Lake.

While not the kind of exercise I wanted to accomplish today, it was good to stretch the legs in a different way with the family. Plus, lugging my son on my back over 4 miles, and 1000 feet of elevation change was no small task. And of course you cant beat the scenery.

To top it all off, the Lake McDonald Lodge, which has been closed for the winter season, opened today at NOON. They happen to have a great lake side pub with Fat Tire on draught. So after our triumphant trek, we settled in for some buffalo burgers, beer, and huckleberry chocolate.

So, not a day per plan, but a good day none the less. Tomorrow should be even better, but I’m not revealing my plans this time until after. Don’t want to jinx myself like last night!

  1. Sounds awesome to me – I was just telling my boyfriend the other day that it would be really fun to go hiking or kayaking or something! Of course, there’s really nothing to “hike” anywhere near Minneapolis… but that’s beside the point.

p.s. If you and the family ever decide to make it out to Minneapolis, my restaurant is ALSO on the lake, and we have Fat Tire on tap too. 😉
