Dragging and Dragons
Well, it’s been quite a different two weeks for this triathlete. Ever since the Polson Triathlon, I have been essentially winging it training wise. I’m experimenting with different workouts, strength training, and swim techniques. It’s been fun to mix it up, but at the same time, the lack of regular training has made my body feel like a wreck and sluggish. Here is a summary of the last two weeks, if I can remember right.
|8/30||Swim||Day Off. Blisters!|
|9/1||Bike||3 miles on the treadmill. Just loosening the feet.|
|9/2||Run||4 miles on the treadmill. Gently. Okay, with 4X.25mi at 6:48.|
|9/3||Run/Swim||Honestly, I can’t remember. I know my feet were still hurting.|
|9/4||Run||Got destroyed at the track. New workout. Decreasing intervals. Each quarter mile is faster by two seconds. I tried to start with 1.5 miles but couldn’t hold it. Started at 1 miles and worked my way down (1 mi/.75 mi/.5 mi/ .25 mi)|
|9/5||Ride||TR- Ericsson. Good stuff.|
|9/6||Swim||2000 yards split as 500 yard repeats. Followed by some Dragon boat practice.|
|9/7||Run||Trying to build up my endurance again. Seven miles on the track at 54 ish.|
|9/8||Dragon Boat Race||Dragons. On a lake. Racing! See below.|
|9/9||Weights||Instead of the gym, put in some serious lifting with yard work. Landscaping with river rock. Unloaded a full truck load (one cubic yard) with a shovel. Majorly sore.|
|9/10||Swim/Run/Ride||2000 yards in the pool with a comfortable 1000y TT at 16:34. 3 mile leg loosening run on the track; fastest at 7:34. 2×20 on Trainer Road|
I guess I should fill this out more regularly.
Anyhow, after today’s workouts, I definitely feel that I am slipping a bit. I also have put on a pound or two thanks to more “liberal” diet. Okay, I’ve been enjoying plenty of pizza, beer, and ice cream. Yesterday I had a chocolate filled pastry for desert after a dinner of chicken wings and pizza. YUM. All together though, I feel my mind and body starting to long for training, so I guess this “break” is doing what it is supposed to do: get me ready for a long winter of pain.
As you may remember, I have been planning on participating in my first dragon boat race for fun, and this weekend was the big event. The inaugural Flathead Lake Dragon Boat Race was a blast! Here are some pics I took from the event.

All I can think of is how cool it would be if they could get one of these flying behind the winners of Kona as they head down the last mile of the run. If Crowie wins again, they could call it “As the Crowie Flys” footage. Oh man, I hope I don’t get sued.
Unfortunately, we didn’t do as well as we wanted, but it was a great learning experience. And plenty of fun. No, don’t worry, I am not planning on becoming an amateur “dragonete”, but I will be back next year!
This week, I am laying low overall as I have the Huckleberry 100 ride coming up on Saturday. This is going to be hilarious as I have absolutely no capability to ride 100 miles well right now. My longest ride since Arizona last year has been 1 hour and 45 minutes! But you know, sometimes you just have to say to hell with that and show up. I am just looking to getting on for a fun day on the road and eating my way through the miles. Plenty of photos to come from that soon. I am also getting some new gear in the mail shortly and I will finally be doing some new reviews. Stay tuned.
